Workshop in Uppsala:

This Workshop took place at the Ångströms Laboratories, 2003. More than fifty participants were present  from both academia, clinical hospitals, biotech industry and pharma industry.

The Workshop was divided into three parts where Prof. Caprioli and Dr. Reyzer made presentations within the Tissue Imaging & Profiling Research Area using Mass Spectrometry.

In the first part , Prof. Caprioli gave an overview of the Imaging field using Mass Spectrometry technology where state-of the-art capabilities as well as limitations were presented.

Disease areas such as cancer, inflammation and CNS were highlighted with examples of peptide/protein expression profile generation.

In the second part Dr. Reyzer presented the technology from an experimental view point where the accurate protocol developments were being outlined.

Importance of tissue preparation and instrumental operations and settings were illustrated by disease related examples.

The third part was an interactive discussion where the heterogenous audience, including people from histology, pathology, cell biology, molecular biology and chemistry areas were challenging the speakers to what is essential and not. Further, the limitations for instance of profiling micro-environments, how important is that since the laser diameter used in the MALDI instrumentation still has a width of a few micrometers. Additionally the cellular localisation, how to address that and the tissue depth of analysis whereby the peptide/protein patterns are generated was a matter of intense discussions.
